That's an inspiring story, too, Marie. It sounds like your teacher was transformed just as much as her students. Jerry

What an inspiring story! Back in my day, no one wrote "journals" except me. I knew even then that journal writing kept me out of the most serious of troubles, and opened my spirit to the richness of human experience.

By the time I got to college, my freshman English teacher asked us all to keep journals during the term; she would read them periodically. At the end, she was so moved and impressed by the depth of our thoughts and experiences, she gave everyone an A. The classroom, by then, had taken on an air of sanctuary. We students had become brethren of sorts.

Indeed, Shirley. Freedom Writers certainly highlights the electrifying role of the teacher. (Even though Erin does her best to stay out of the way and let the kids have the stage.)

Great topic for a blog post, Jerry. Another example of the power memoir has to heal the brokenness in our world and to bind up fragments into a whole. The teacher is essential in this story, however. Maybe those of us who feel called to tell our stories and help others tell theirs can play a small catalyst role in this healing process also.

Hi Karen, Thanks for your comment. I'm so glad the essay moved you. I didn't want to get too maudlin or self-conscious about it but now that we're down here in these informal comments, I will confess that my eyes were damp through most of the audio book. Something extraordinary took place here, and I felt privileged to be a part of it. Jerry

Hi Jerry,
This is a beautiful, moving essay about an amazing project. I know of it through the movie only. Now you've motivated me to read the actual stories. Thank you.
