Sounds like the PUER AETERNUS (PUELLA AETERNA) condition. Longfellow wrote a poem about it, and it appears elsewhere in literature. I've struggled with it for decades. In my case, and I suspect others, at the root of it is childhood trauma that interferes with development. In addition to being shunned and tortured by my mother from the start (and being taken from her for neglect), I had 3 years of development ripped away (age 9-12) by a horribly abusive orphange superintendent who enjoyed beating children. The consequences are permanent, but can be molded into something positive. Such is the theme of my memoir.

Thanks for raising a subject dear to my heart.
