I think you’ve put your finger on what is indeed the core appeal of memoir–and of most stories–seeing someone struggle and grow, whether he or she succeeds in a worldly way or not. It’s the “hero’s journey.” We want to know what life is like for others, how they deal with the cards they were dealt, how they strive and make peace. Your post is clarifying about this essential appeal.

I just love your warm, succinct delineation of the process for writing one’s life story.You have transformed what might appear to some be a complex, overpowering endeavor into a realistic, simply encouraging, “Yeah, why not tell my story” approach.
Once again you’ve rekindled the flame of my own desire to tell my story.
